Based on a news report by IRNA, the biggest barrier for citrus producers is high costs and low whole sale price at the market place. While orange is being sold 300 Tomans whole sale, the costs to grow it is much higher and gardeners can't get their real benefit out of their own commodity. In some of citrus producing states the watering system is still the same traditional way that needs to be modified and changed into modern ones especially when droughts. There have been occasions at which a garden needs 800 meters of piping to get the water there but regarding the final fees it's not efficient whatsoever.
On the other hand pistachio gardeners have the same hardship about water besides difficulties in getting bank loans. The especial loans for farmers are provided at 19% interest and must be back after 6 months but the first barrier is the complicated process and the second one is paying it back. Pistachio farmers can't go to the final; markets to sell their products thus they have to sell them to the dealers at what ever price they define. Dealers bought this year's crop of pistachio at 4000 or 5000 Tomans per kilo while it's being sold at 8000 to 15000 Tomans per kilo at the retailers. To resolve the problem of price the government asked the co-operatives to buy the crop from farmers but farmers complain that the money gets to them late for the co-operatives pay them in 4 installments. Some farmers have to wait 6 months to be paid fully. Some experts argue that mechanization is the only solution to get the crop sooner and with less wastage in order to cover such problems.
When the production costs reduces the competition power of the product increases. Going to apple growers in Isfahan we faced unhappy farmers who were angry about the vast import of fruit especially apples. The say while the Iranian apples are in the cold stores the imported ones are in the market and being sold. Rice farmers have their own hardship. Even though their product is insured the insurance company refuses to pay on time or even at times no money is paid due to various reasons they make. After the harvest is ready it has to wait a long time in the ware houses to get to the markets. For example this year's crop war ready in September but they've stayed in the ware houses for there's no costumer. Experts believe that unplanned imports, on-expert decision makers and not inviting the representatives of farmers at the time of decision making are the biggest issues on the way of Iranian farming. Farmers indeed are an important society of the country who are responsible for the food of the nation. |
