T&DPI Magazine - 70% of orange concentrate imported

70% of orange concentrate imported

Producing 4.3 million tons of circuit, Iran is a major importer of orange concentrate for their converting industry. The secretary of Lemon juice producers claimed. He added: our annual need to orange concentrate is almost 20thousand tons but only 6000 tons of it are provided in the state and the rest is just imported.

While 50 years ago the majority of the orange produced in Iran was industrial, at the moment the varieties have changed to Thomson, Vallencia and Washington which are not suitable for converting industries. Thus we have to import what we need. Unfortunately producing this type of concentrate is costly sue to various reasons like the price of orange, lack of fund and not enough number of cold stores.

The quality also plays a major role because the Iranian products enjoy a less quality in compare to the foreign one although the price can be 800 Tomans cheaper per kilo. The foreign type needs less sugar and enjoys a better color. Even though the current year we have observed substantial produce especially in grapes, apples and orange, this has not resulted in the growth of converting industries. There is a big barrier for Iranian crop to enter and that's the final price which is really high in compare to the crop of our neighboring countries.
